specialized in stationery and fashion goods was opened by Charles Lewis Tiffany
and his classmate John B. Young. The son of a miller in Connecticut loaned 1,000
dollars as capital and opened this shop at No. 259 Broadway, New York, 1837. 35 million U.S. dollars, was the amount of legacy which Charles Lewis Tiffany
left when he died in 1902. At that moment, this shabby shop had degenerated into a leading U.S. high-end
jewelry store - Tiffany jewelry company's reputation was even better than the
French brand Cartier. In the late 19th century, Tiffany's customers included the
British Queen Victoria, King of Italy and many celebrities in Denmark, Belgium,
Greece and the United States. Have to say, Charles Lewis Tiffany is a talented businessman. When he opened a
stationery shop, he had taken a novel distribution methods, in which all the
goods were clearly marked and declined to counter-offer. He has extremely
commercial approach. At that time, Charles was informed that one of the American
telegraph cables across the Atlantic needed to be replaced due to breakage, he
resolutely bought it. When people were still surprised to suspect what the cable
could be used for in the end, the cable, had been cut into about 2 inches long
small pieces, appeared in the Tiffany store and was sold as a historical
souvenir. In 1887, Charles bought a batch of French crown jewels, including the
precious bright yellow diamond belonging to Empress Eugenie. People thought that
he would sell it at a high price, but rather than doing this in a rush, Charles
calmly held an exhibition of it in New York. And he made a great fortune from the visitors flocking from all over the
world to see the elegant demeanor of this valuable rarity. Tiffany is the
earliest-known silver products. In 1851, Tiffany introduced specially designed
silverware, which had caught extensive attention. It was the first to use the 925 silver, which became the standard of silver
products in the US. On the World Exhibition in Paris 1867, Tiffany's exquisite
silverware became the first American brand that gained the Exhibition Award.
Tiffany's design was favored by the US president Abraham Lincoln. In 1861, Tiffany was invited to design the Lincoln Memorial tank for the
presidential inauguration ceremony and Lincoln also gave his wife a set of
Tiffany pearl jewelry as a gift.
